Caring for Your Silver Jewellery: A Simple Guide

Silver jewellery has a quiet elegance that never really goes out of style. But unlike gold, silver reacts with the air around it — which means a little regular care goes a long way in keeping your pieces bright.

Why Silver Tarnishes

Tarnish happens when silver reacts with sulfur compounds in the air, forming a thin, dark layer on the surface. It's not damage — it's just chemistry — and it's completely reversible with the right care.

Humidity, perfume, and even the natural oils on your skin can speed this process up. That's normal, and it doesn't mean your jewellery is low quality.

Everyday Care Tips

  • Wear it often. Surprisingly, silver that's worn regularly tends to tarnish less than silver left untouched in a drawer, since the natural oils on your skin help keep it polished.
  • Take it off before water. Remove jewellery before showering, swimming, or washing your hands where possible — chlorine and soap residue accelerate tarnishing.
  • Last on, first off. Apply perfume, lotion, and hairspray before putting your jewellery on, and take it off before you sleep.
  • Store it flat and dry. Keep pieces in a soft pouch or lined box, away from direct sunlight and humidity. Anti-tarnish strips are a small investment that make a big difference.

Cleaning at Home

For light tarnish, a simple silver polishing cloth is usually all you need — no chemicals required. For more noticeable tarnish:

  1. Line a bowl with aluminum foil, shiny side up.
  2. Add warm water and a spoonful of baking soda.
  3. Submerge the piece for a minute or two.
  4. Rinse gently and pat dry with a soft cloth.

Avoid this method for pieces with gemstones, pearls, or oxidized (intentionally darkened) detailing — a soft polishing cloth is safer for those.

When to Bring It In

If a piece has deep scratches, a loose stone, or tarnish that won't lift, it's worth having a jeweller take a look rather than reaching for harsher home remedies. A little professional care every year or two keeps your favourite pieces around for a lifetime.
